A schizophrenia diagnosis requires a dramatic adjustment to family norms3

Schizophrenia often strikes at an age when patients expect to gain independence. Major responsibilities are suddenly and unexpectedly thrust upon parents and caregivers in dramatic fashion. The lowered expectations for the future of their loved one, along with new, long-term care responsibilities, can weigh heavily on caregivers, subjecting them to significant burden and distress.3
